I met Toyo as he gathered mangos in the hills around Tiron village. Barefooted, Toyo trekked up the hot, rocky path to a tree where he had earlier picked the fruit. he received about a dollar for picking, and then hauling, 150 lbs of mangos on his back. "I don't mind [back-breaking] work, as long as there is money for my family."
Like many people in his village, Toyo has only an 8th grade education. He travelled extensively within the country for six years, seeking work in remote locations like Aceh, Batam and Papua, then had to return to his village where unemployment is about 25%. He sadly admits, "I don't understand why I've never seen success. I work hard and am not frivolous like others."
